On Thursday, 29th March, staff and students from Edinburgh Law School along with members from across the legal community, gathered at the McEwan Hall to celebrate the University of Edinburgh’s Free Legal Advice Centre on its 10th Anniversary.
Elaine Tyre, former Director of Professional Legal Studies, who sadly passed away in December 2010, founded the award-winning Centre, fondly known as “FLAC” by its student community.
Ten years of delivering pro bono legal services
The Centre has flourished and expanded over the past ten years, delivering pro bono legal services to members of the public living in and around the Edinburgh area who, for whatever reason, cannot access legal advice or support elsewhere. Student advisers, Edinburgh Law School staff and volunteer qualified solicitors work together to help resolve legal issues. Proposals for further expansion of pro bono services were highlighted at the event along with an announcement that the Centre had been shortlisted for the Access to Justice Award at the forthcoming Law Works and Attorney–General Student Pro Bono Awards.
Then followed the dedication to Elaine Tyre, which culminated in the unveiling of a plaque to her memory and the renaming of the Centre room, The Elaine Tyre Room. Her husband, Lord Tyre, who is also Patron of the Centre, along with their children, Kirsty Tyre, Catriona Tyre and Euan Tyre, joined those gathered who were there to pay tribute to her many achievements.

Rebecca Samaras, Director of the Edinburgh Centre for Professional Legal Studies said:
“I was privileged to have known Elaine Tyre as a mentor, as a colleague, and as a friend. She was immensely committed and full of life and energy. FLAC was but one of her many achievements and I am delighted she is being recognised for them here today. She worked tirelessly for professional legal education and her students, and contributed hugely to their academic lives. She did not stop there, but remained in touch with hundreds of former students. Her door was always open.”
The plaque was donated from funds raised by all former and current Diploma students as a token of their thanks and respect for their former Director. It will be mounted in the Elaine Tyre Room within the Edinburgh Centre for Professional Legal Studies at 9B Holyrood Road.
