The course, entitled “Capacity development for effective management and conservation of cheetah and wild dog populations in Eastern and Southern Africa”,  will be held in Lilongwe, Malawi, from 9-13 January 2012.

    Edinburgh Law School Graduate and former Scottish rugby star, Philip Fitzgerald was awarded the Docteur en droit (doctor of laws) last month. Philip defended his thesis in Toulon on 26 November 2011 before a jury of four French academics and former Edinburgh Law School colleague Peter Cullen.

    Edinburgh Sheriff Court opened its doors to the entire Edinburgh Law School Diploma year group on Monday 12 December.  A record 176 full and part time students studying for their Diploma in Professional Legal Practice delivered a variety of pleas in mitigation to seven Sheriffs at the end of the first semester of teaching in this academic year.

    The School of Law’s Free Legal Advice Centre, based within the Centre for Professional Legal Studies, is delighted to report that the Law School Music Society Concert raised a fantastic £611 in donations for the Centre last Friday. Students from the Diploma in Professional Legal Practice collected donations from attendees at the concert to support the ongoing work of the Centre, which provides free legal advice on matters such as family law, property law and employment law.

    Edinburgh Law School Honorary Graduate, Lady Justice Julia Sebutinde, has been nominated for election to the International Court of Justice. Julia was awarded the Honorary Doctor of Laws in 2009 in recognition of her work in human rights in Uganda and internationally, and her fight against corruption. She also graduated with an LLM (Distinction) from the University of Edinburgh in 1991.

    The Law School would like to extend its congratulations to Professors J Kenyon Mason and Graeme Laurie for their success at the British Medical Association Medical Book Awards 2011. Their textbook, Law & Medical Ethics, 8th edn, OUP, 2010 was Highly Commended in the category of Basis of Medicine.

    The BMA book awards this year generated over 700 entries across the categories, so for their textbook to be pulled out for commendation is great news.

    All colleagues in the School of Law are saddened by the early death of Lord Rodger of Earlsferry on 26 June 2011.  Alan Rodger was the greatest Scots lawyer of his generation as well as a highly distinguished scholar.  He has been an Honorary Fellow in the Law School since 1993 and was awarded an Honorary LLD by the University of Edinburgh in 2001. A much cherished friend of our School and greatly missed. Our deepest sympathy goes to his family.

    The Lexis Nexis Mooting Competition was held in the Court of Session last night and the standard of the competition was very high.  Congratulations to the winners of the competition Tom Watret and Euan McDougall, and to the runners up.  The Judge commented that it was a very difficult decision and that he was very impressed with the structure, style and advocacy skills displayed by all four finalists.

    The event, hosted by Robin Harper MSP, was attended by practitioners, policy makers and academics from across Scotland. Professor Lesley McAra began the discussion by presenting powerful findings from the Edinburgh Study on the dangers of using 'soft' information held by the police on suspects and disclosing offences committed while under the age of 16 and admitted at children's hearings. She concluded that more consideration needed to be taken of the nature, context and pattern of individual offending to understand levels of future risk. She also pointed out that disclosure of one-off or episodic violent offences or underage sexual activity ran the risk of stigmatising and labelling young people, seriously damaging their later life chances.
