<description>Edinburgh Law School last week signed the grant agreement with the European Union to fund the development of a ground-breaking multi-institutional PhD Programme. The grant will fund the joint development a programme by four European and one African Universities, during which time academics will build networks, design the specific elements of the programme and its organisational structure, with the ultimate goal of offering a multilateral joint doctorate in the important area of Law and Development.</description>

<item><title>Edinburgh Students' Success in Telders International Law Mooting Competition</title>

The Edinburgh team were competing against teams from 26 other universities across Europe. </description>

The lecture was given in 2011 by President of Ireland Mary McAleese and in 2010 by Lady Brenda Hale, Justice of the Supreme Court.</description>

<item><title>Nominations Open for 2012 Law Students' Council Elections</title>

<description>The Law Students&amp;#39; Council (LSC) is the elected body representing all students within the School of Law.  Nominations for elections for Law Students&amp;#39; Council Year Representatives and Office-Bearers opened today and close on Thursday 15 March, at Noon. LSC plays an important role within the School of Law, ensuring students&amp;#39; views and needs are fully taken into account during decision-making by academic and administrative staff.  As part of this, LSC works with both staff and fellow students, sitting on a variety of School of Law management groups as well as working with class representatives to identify common issues across courses.Over the past year LSC has provided significant input to the recent Learning and Teaching Review that is introducing changes to course organisation and structure, lobbied the School of Law on issues such as library opening times and facilities for students, and worked with local MSPs to pressure the government to re-introduce living cost loans for Diploma students, to facilitate equal access to the legal profession to those from all backgrounds.Nominations forms and election regulations can be found online, on the downloads page of the LSC Communities page on the School of Law Website  , or picked up from the EUSA reception at Potterow or the lobby outside the Law School Teaching Office. <description>Over the weekend of 3rd/4th March 2012, Edinburgh Law School held a practice competition in advance of the Willem Vis Moot, a renowned annual international commercial arbitration moot which takes place in Vienna in April. The Vis Pre-Moot was arranged in order to support the Scottish teams in their preparations for Vienna. Students from Edinburgh University, Aberdeen University and Victoria University of Wellington (New Zealand) came together to plead their case against each other in front of a panel of moot arbitrators, consisting of practising arbitrators, advocates, solicitors, trainees and academics.</description>

<item><title>EC7 funded MEDIADEM project publishes second stage findings</title>

<description>Edinburgh Law School represents the UK in the European Commission Seventh Framework (EC7) funded MEDIADEM research project, &amp;lsquo;European Media Policies Revisited: Valuing &amp;amp; Reclaiming Free and Independent Media in Contemporary Democratic Systems&amp;rsquo;. The project has recently concluded its second stage with in-depth reports discussing policy and regulatory tools that have a bearing on the development of free and independent media. The reports from the fourteen participating countries, including that for the UK, can be found on the project website http://www.mediadem.eliamep.gr/findings/. All the reports have been submitted to the European Commission for information.</description>

<item><title>Japanese Parliamentary Delegation Visit</title>

<description>A delegation from the Japanese House of Representatives visited Edinburgh Law School on 9 January 2012. The Japanese House (Shugin-In) is researching the operation of voting systems and is particularly interested in the Scottish experience with the Additional Member System. To this end, Navraj Singh Ghaleigh met with several members of the Legislative Bureau of the House of Representatives to discuss matters such as split ticketing, double candidacy and the d&amp;#39;Honte system. The delegation will be meeting colleagues in other universities, regulators and political think tanks both in Scotland and London.</description>

She also graduated with an LLM (Distinction) from the University of Edinburgh in 1991.</description>
