The Mitchell Working Papers commemorate the contribution made by the late Professor JDB Mitchell to the study of European law and institutions. In 1968 John Mitchell, then Professor of Constitutional Law at Edinburgh University, founded the Centre of European Governmental Studies in the Faculty of Law (the first such centre in the UK) and was appointed the first Salvesen Professor of European Institutions, recognising the generosity of the Salvesen family. Already a leading authority on constitutional law, Mitchell went on to make significant scholarly contributions to the study and practice of European law. John Mitchell was also determined that his Centre would make a contribution to debates over the future of European integration – be this in the legal, economic or institutional spheres. Those who were privileged to have attended Mitchell’s regular Friday seminars can testify that he achieved this aim.

The Mitchell Working Papers are intended to keep alive the tradition of scholarship and debate over a wide range of EU issues that lay at the heart of John Mitchell’s vision for the Centre for European Governmental Studies, now the Europa Institute.

While the Mitchell Working Papers will publish papers given at Conferences and Seminars organised by the Europa Institute, submissions for publication are also invited in any field of European Studies, in line with the eclectic vision of John Mitchell.

Potential contributors are invited to follow the guidelines for contributors provided here. Enquiries in advance of submission are welcome.
