This talk is on the dissertation research process and includes key tips on
planning your research and writing-up.
Viewers should be aware that this talk was recorded at the beginning of session 2008/09. The timescale and programme for meetings with supervisors, mentioned by Prof McAra at the beginning of the podcast, have been altered in session 2009/10. Full details are in the Guidance on the LLB Honours Dissertation for 2009/10.
As set out in this document supervisees are asked to arrange the first meeting with their supervisors during week 2 of semester 1. The purpose of this first meeting is to discuss the title of the dissertation and initial reading. The dissertation title MUST be approved by the end of week 4 (16 October), or a percentage penalty will be applied.
For the second meeting in week 8, students are required to submit a plan of the dissertation and a sample of writing to be discussed. The third meeting takes the form of a group session in week 14 (week beginning 11 Jan 2010) at which students will be asked to give brief presentations on their progress. For the fourth and final meeting in February (week beginning 15 Feb 2010), students are asked to provide a draft of a section of the dissertation which will then be discussed with the supervisor. The final submission date will be 26 March 2010. |

| Seminars, Study Skills and Essay Writing |
| I am Lindsay Kelly and I am the Widening Participation Officer in the School of Law. My role is a varied one but its primary function is the promotion and support of widening participation into law. I also run LawPALS and PALS+ within the School. The role has expanded somewhat and now encompasses study skills workshops, hence my involvement with the Honours Induction. I was also involved in the student feedback focus groups, which raised the issue of honours induction and led to this revamp of the honours induction programme. In my study skills capacity, I am here today to talk to you about seminars, study skills and essays. |
