| Postgraduate Programmes at the Europa Institute |
A postgraduate student at the Europa Institute becomes part of one of the largest interdisciplinary communities of active researchers in the field of European studies in UK Universities, and indeed in Europe. Studying European studies (politics, law, economics and other disciplines) at the postgraduate level is an ideal preparation for a number of careers, including work in the European institutions, in other public institutions, in legal practice in the UK and elsewhere, in NGOs, and, of course, in universities themselves. A number of programmes available provide essential foundational study, leading to a PhD programme.
Postgraduate students at the Europa Institute have a choice between a number of different 'taught' courses which have both a 'classroom' element and a research element, typically leading to a Masters degree; or alternatively students may choose to carry out their own independent research under supervision from members of staff leading to a research degree such as a PhD.
To request a brochure about the Europa Institute to be sent to you by post, email europa@ed.ac.uk with your postal address.

Students wishing to undertake research in the European studies field, whether of a single disciplinary or an interdisciplinary nature, can register either in the Law School or in the School of Social and Political Studies (SSPS), where Edinburgh Politics is located. Where a student's registration is located will depend upon the nature of the project that they want to undertake, and the availability of an appropriate supervisor. We are able to offer supervision in most major subfields of European Studies. Please use this link to match your research interests against those of the members of the Europa Institute, and feel free to make a preliminary enquiry by email with the relevant member(s) of staff. If you do not find a direct match, it is still worth making an enquiry with the member of staff whose interests seem most closely to match yours. Do not worry if you find that the two most appropriate members of staff are in different Schools. Many students have a supervisorial team located in both Schools, and close coordination means that the same level of support and research training can be given to students regardless of where their registration is located. Making an initial application via either the Law School or via SSPS does not finally determine where your registration will be located if you are offered a place to study, as this will depend upon an assessment of your application.
Europa postgraduate students are invited to participate in the full range of research and other related activities (conferences, lectures, seminars, etc.) organised by members of the Europa Institute, but also to play a full role in the research culture of their respective school(s). Training in the skills necessary to become full members of the academic community is provided within the framework of the doctoral programme, in particular discipline-specific training in research methods and skills, and more general training in transferable skills.
The Europa Postgraduate Research Reading Group organises seminars and discussions about a wide range of topics relating to European affairs. Situated at the heart of the Institute, the Europa Postgraduate Research Reading Group aims to further discussion on core aspects of the laws and policies of the EU, and is open to all students and staff of the University of Edinburgh.
A list of current Europa research students and their interests can be found here.
The Europa Library is a section of the Law and Europa Library. It holds more than 16,000 volumes, and includes major collections of official papers. As a European Documentation Centre it receives a large proportion of the official publications of the European Union. The Library also holds official publications of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), the Council of Europe and Western European Union. It also has a large holding of national publications, as well as monographs and serials on public law, government, politics and economics, from various member states. It is Library policy to maintain facilities for up-to-date research in areas within its fields of interest.
Outside the Europa Library, additional research facilities are available in other University libraries, particularly the Law Library to which it is adjacent, and the Main University Library in George Square. The City of Edinburgh has a number of other research libraries of interest to European studies, notably the National Library of Scotland which is a copyright deposit library and which is the United Kingdom depository library of the official archives of the European Union.
Information about funding and scholarships to postgraduate study are available on the Law School postgraduate website and the SSPS Graduate School website, respectively.
The School of Law has recently announced *The Binks Trust Scholarships* to support students taking the LLM in European Law. More details on the LLM webpage.
