LL.M Scholarship and Student Finance Information

Scholarships are available to students wishing to pursue the LL.M via distance learning at The University of Edinburgh.

 

SCRIPT Scholarships 2008/09

 

The SCRIPT Research Centre for Studies in Intellectual Property and Technology Law offers two scholarships for students wishing to pursue one of the following programmes:

  • LLM Innovation, Technology and the Law (Distance Learning)
  • LLM Medical Law (Distance Learning)
  • LLM Intellectual Property Law (Distance Learning)
  • LLM Information Technology Law (Distance Learning)

 

Scholarship amount: £3,000 each

Number of awards: 2

Award Criteria: Awards will be based on a short paper (up to 1500 words including footnotes) on following topic:

 

Critically assess an example of how technological innovation (eg. in medicine, IT, music distribution, forensics) impacts on the law, and vice versa.

 

Your paper must be your own original work, and you should not have used it in any other context. It will be judged on its academic merit. At least two members of the academic staff will assess the paper independently (double blind), and in case of dispute will refer the paper to a third member/party.

 The first award is open to applicants from around the world. The second award is open specifically to assist students from developing countries. A developing country shall be considered any country classified as a low income economy by the World Bank (http://web.worldbank.org/WBSITE/EXTERNAL/DATASTATISTICS/0,,contentMDK:20421402~pagePK:64133150~piPK:64133175~theSitePK:239419,00.html#Low_income).  

Application process: Applications for the scholarship must be submitted to llm.distance@ed.ac.uk by 31 July 2008. Please use the coversheet provided (downloadable here). To be considered for the award, you must first complete the application process for entry to the LL.M in Innovation, Technology and the Law (distance learning) prior to the closing date of 31 July 2008. Please download the attached coversheet to submit with your paper.

 

Award Process: The two students who are selected will have the scholarship amount of £3,000 deducted from their fees during the registration process if they are full-time. Students who are part-time starting in September 2008 over 2 years will have £1,500 deducted from both year one and year two fees. Students who are part-time starting in September 2008 over 3 years will have £1,000 deducted from each year’s fees.  Students paying fees by direct debit or credit card mandate will have the award distributed equally between each instalment.

 

Award Date: Successful applicants will be informed by email in August.

 

 

The University of Edinburgh Online Distance Learning Master's Scholarships

** CLOSING DATE FOR APPLICATIONS FOR SEPTEMBER 2008 - 30TH MAY 2008**

Each scholarship will have a total value of £5,000 which will be deducted from the tuition fee for the total duration of the programme of study.

Applicants should already have been offered a place at the University of Edinburgh and should have firmly accepted that offer or be intending to do so.

Criteria

The scholarship will be awarded broadly on the basis of academic merit. Candidates must have, or expect to obtain, a UK first class or 2:1 Honours degree at undergraduate level or the international equivalent.

A completed scholarship application form, together with a copy of your degree transcript and two academic references, should be received by the Scholarships and Student Finance Office by the closing date of Friday 30 May 2008 in order to be considered for the scholarship.

Selection Procedure

A Selection Committee will meet in June 2008 to select the scholarship holders. The winners of the scholarships will be announced by the end of June 2008.

 

Sallie Mae UK Education Loan Programme for UK Residents  

The Sallie Mae UK Education Loan is a credit-based, unsecured loan for undergraduate and postgraduate students enrolled in a degree programme at participating universities in the UK including the University of Edinburgh. The loan provides up to £20,000 in loan funds for tuition fees, and living costs per academic session for eligible students.

The typical rate for this loan is 9.3% APR (variable) with interest rates varying depending on your personal credit circumstances. Payments are deferred whilst you are studying at least part time (50%) and a nine-month payment holiday is available following graduation or should you withdraw from the University.
