Distance Learning Part-time or Distance learning Full-Time

The LL.M  is offered part-time and full-time via online distance learning. If you are applying for the distance learning programme, please ensure to choose distance learning AND part-time OR full-time for Question 20b on the application form. Failure to indicate your intention to study by distance learning part-time or distance learning full-time will result in delays in your application.

Academic and Language Certificates

We require either original or notary signed copies of your supporting documentation. Photocopies, fax or emailed scans do not meet with our requirements for admission. If you send notary signed copies, be sure to include both sides of your transcripts. In most cases, you need only send through awards given by higher and further education institutions, although you may wish to include any professional or vocational courses you have completed.

If you are required to submit language test certificates, in some cases it may be possible to supply us with your test number only, which will allow us to gather your test results on-line.

References

The University requires a confidential reference, preferably on the headed paper of your referee's institution or company, or with the official stamp of your institution. A form is provided as part of the application download which you should include alongside the request to your referee.

Submission

Submissions for the distance learning LL.Ms should be sent to the Postgraduate Office - Distance Learning, College of Humanities & Social Sciences, David Hume Tower, George Square, Edinburgh EH8 9JX.

Please contact llm-distance@ed.ac.uk to inform the distance learning team at the School of Law of your application intended start date, part-time or full-time status so they can be kept updated on the status of your application through the year. This will ensure that your application can be dealt with quickly and that you will be ready to start your programme on the intended start date should your application be successful.

Application deadline

You are invited to submit your application by the end of July for entry in September 2008. Please submit a copy of your application by email if you cannot have the original documents reach us by the deadline: llm.distance@ed.ac.uk.

Later entrance, in August and September, is possible but you are advised to ensure you complete this application process in good time as programme and module places are generally allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, and may be subject to restriction. Please email llm.distance@ed.ac.uk for further information regarding application deadlines and availability and visit our FAQ section.

Outcome

Once your application file is complete, it will be made available at the School of Law for consideration.

There are three possible outcomes:

  1. Unconditional offer
  2. Conditional offer
  3. Rejection

You will be notified by email from the Distance Learning office as soon as the School decision has been reached. A recommendation will then be made to the College Postgraduate Office in writing.

The school recommendation is a key part of the offer process,  but only the College can make an official offer.  The College will consider whether the offer recommended by the school can be made unconditionally or conditional.   In a few extreme cases a recommendation may not be upheld by the College.

If your application was successful, you will receive a copy of the official offer letter via email. You must return your offer letter accepting or refusing a place on the LL.M  programme as soon as possible. When it is received your record will be updated accordingly.

From this point, assuming your application was successful and you accept your offer, you will now be entered in to the University student records system and begin the process of matriculation some time before your intended start date.
