Criminology at the University of Edinburgh

Welcome to the web pages for the Criminology group at the University of Edinburgh. Please see the menu on the right for further information.

Criminology at Edinburgh Law School has a distinguished history, dating back to the 1970s. Thanks to the foundation laid by scholars such as Derrick McClintock, David Garland, Peter Young, W.G. 'Kit' Carson and David Smith criminology at Edinburgh can claim to have shaped criminological studies across a range of areas and to offer a distinctive profile and character. We value work that is theoretically curious, intellectually open-minded, methodologically pluralistic, empirically rich, and committed to making civic contributions to public policy and normative debate. Our current work spans a range of themes and approaches from studies of the social implications of surveillance technologies, to the longitudinal study of youth transitions, policing, punishment and penal policy and the politics of crime and social harm. We strive to maintain an open and fruitful dialogue with colleagues in other areas of legal studies and across the social sciences.

We aspire to be recognized as a centre of excellence in teaching, learning and research training and to provide the best possible environment for new scholars seeking to enhance their skills and develop the field.
