The Centre for Law and Society organises numerous events, including the well-known Seminar Series, workshops and conferences, as well as the annual CLS lecture (see below).

The Centre's postgraduate members are involved in the Criminology and Criminal Justice Research Group, and the Edinburgh Legal Theory Research Group.

Annual Lecture

The Annual Lecture is delivered by a distinguished scholar every year. 

In 2011, the annual lecture was given by Professor Nicola Lacey, Oxford University.

The 2010 Annual Lecture was given by Professor Martin Krygier of the University of New South Wales on May 27th.

The 2009 lecture was given by Professor Antony Duff of the University of Stirling, on 5 November, and was entitled: 'Towards a Theory of Criminal Law?'.

The 2008 Lecture, entitled 'Corporate Social Responsibility: Beyond Law, Through Law, For Law', was delivered by Professor Doreen McBarnet CBE, Universities of Oxford and Edinburgh, on Wednesday 4 June 2008, 5pm, Lecture Theatre 175, Old College, South Bridge.

The 2007 Lecture, entitled 'America and its Death Penalty', was delivered by Professor David Garland (NYU), a former doctoral student at the Centre. You can listen to the lecture by visiting our podcast page.

Previous CLS Annual Lecturers have included: Jürgen Habermas, Zigmund Bauman, James Tully, and Gunther Teubner. 

Seminar Series

The Centre runs a regular and well-known Seminar Series during semester times. Seminar topics cover areas such as legal theory, criminology, the sociology of law, socio-legal studies, and medical jurisprudence. This year the theme of the series is Law and Conflict.

Previous speakers have included: Ngaire Naffine, Ian Loader, Susan Hurley, Jonathan Simon, Vanessa Munro, Magnus Ulväng, Ralph Sandland, Alan Norrie, Nicola Lacey, Upendra Baxi, Peter Cane, Alison Liebling, Roger Cotterrell and Nils Jareborg.


Other recent events:

Professor Neil Walker has recently completed The Review of Appellate Jurisdiction in Scotland (2010).

The Scottish Centre for Criminal Justice Research Annual Lecture 2009 was recently hosted by the Centre and delivered by Professor Sonia Snacken of the Free University, Brussels.

The recent 2009 Spring Festival in Legal Theory took place on 8th and 9th May 2009, with four themed workshops, the first of which involved discussion of Professor Nancy Fraser's work. Information about this event can be found here.

Professor Frank Michelman, Harvard Law School visited the Centre on 26th May 2009, to lead a round table discussion on the topic of 'Constitutional Authorship and Constitutional Authority'.

In 2008, the CLS hosted the very successful European Criminology Conference.
