It's never too soon to start thinking about and planning for your future after graduation, and in the current economic climate this is even more important. You can't change the economy, but you can make sure you're as well-prepared as possible to face the future. The university Careers Service is here to support you throughout your time at university and for 2 years after graduation.

To make informed decisions about your future direction, you'll need to think carefully about your interests, strengths, skills and motivators, plus research the prevailing job market. Your broad options are listed below - use the menu on the right to explore them further.

Legal Career in Scotland working for the larger commercial law firms, the wide range of small to medium-size law firms, including high street, family, property, rural, criminal defence, or in-house with local authorities, Government Legal Service for Scotland (GLSS), procurator fiscal, and a range of organisations including financial and energy companies.

Legal Career in England - a small number of Scots law graduates convert yearly.

Careers outwith the legal profession. Studying law is not necessarily a vocational choice, and Edinburgh law graduates are highly regarded in many different career areas. Each year a number of law graduates enter careers outwith the legal profession, the highest proportion going into financial and policy and administrative work. With the increasing numbers of law graduates in Scotland, and the current reduction in traineeship numbers in the legal profession, this trend looks set to continue.

Further Study – each year a percentage of law graduates go on to further study both within and outwith law, in the UK and abroad.

Time out / Gap year - planning ahead is key to making the most of time out.

Use the links above or the menu on the right to explore the above options further, plus find out more about gaining relevant experience, job-hunting and CVs, applications and interviews.
