What will I learn on the course?

First of all, all types of copyright works are covered: from literary, dramatic, musical and artistic works, to film and sound recordings. The course aims to reflect the typically broad scope of works involved in creative practice.

The course is designed for maximum flexibility for participants. Materials are designed to be visually rich and motivating for self-study, incorporating a wide range of case studies of interest to creative industries practitioners, and developed with input from creative practitioners with legal qualifications.
 

Course Content                                                                            

  • Basic concepts of copyright
    Considers the basic concepts in copyright and discusses the steps involved in assessing copyright infringement. eg, how long you can own the copyright in a work  It also provides an introduction to the case studies that will be used to aid your learning in the course.
     
  • Copyright works
    This modules discusses the subject matter that is protected by copyright and considers in detail what can be a copyright work and what cannot be.
     
  • Requirements for and term of copyright protection
    This module discusses the various requirements for copyright protection i.e. when does copyright protection come into existence for various categories of works. It also considers the duration for which copyright protection lasts.
     
  • Authorship & ownership
    This module considers who is the author and who is the owner of copyright works and also considers the moral rights protection provided to authors. eg, who is author of a work that is generated by a computer ?
     
  • Restricted Acts
    Discusses the economic rights under copyright that is the various restricted acts that the copyright owner can prevent.
     
  • Copyright exceptions
    This module discusses the circumstances under which the restricted acts can be carried out without permission of the copyright owner. eg, ways you are allowed to use other people's work.
     
  • Exploitation 1
    Discusses what is involved in exploiting copyright through licensing and assignment.
     
  • Exploitation 2
    This module introduces the various players in the creative industries and discusses their roles and typical copyright contracts in use as well as what is involved in using open permissive licenses.
     
  • Copyright clearance
    Discusses copyright clearance and in particular when permission is required from the copyright owner and how to obtain the same.
     
  • Before or when things go wrong
    This module provides practical guidance on avoiding conflicts regarding copyright as well as ways to address a situation where conflicts may arise, including pointers about gaining further advice on such issues.
