Is there a future for absolute product patent protection?

Sven Bostyn
Senior Lecturer in Intellectual Property Law, The Liverpool Law School, University of Liverpool

It is generally assumed that absolute product protection is part and parcel of the current patent system. The patentability of genetic inventions has brought this principle into question. Is the principle of absolute product protection as absolute and untouchable as one may think at first glance? Is there a rationale for (not) having this principle and what may be the consequences of abandoning it for the patent system as a whole?

The Doha Declaration + 10: Reflections on the TRIPS Agreement and Public Health from a Human Rights Perspective

Duncan Matthews
Professor of Intellectual Property Law, Centre for Commercial Law Studies, Queen Mary, University of London

Access to medicines is a human right. When the WTO Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) was adopted in 1994, it changed dramatically the international landscape with regard to access to medicines and human rights. This seminar will explore why TRIPS raised new concerns about access to medicines and human rights, and will review how the situation has changed since adoption of the Doha Declaration ten years ago.

Cloud Computing: Risks, Rewards and Regulation

Christopher Millard
Professor of Privacy and Information Law, Queen Mary, University of London

Cloud computing has a growing profile, in both private and public sectors, as a platform for innovation and as a means of improving efficiency. It can be difficult, however, to assess the likely benefits and risks of using particular services. This seminar will explore what is actually happening in the cloud market, including a comparative analysis of contracts and an assessment of responsibility for data in clouds.
