Mr Aidan Courtney
M.A., LL.M., ACA
Aidan Courtney is a Visiting Fellow at the SCRIPT Centre in the School of Law at the University of Edinburgh and Chief Operating Officer of Roslin Cells Ltd. He holds an M.A. in economics from the University of Cambridge and a LL.M. from the University of Edinburgh.
His research interests include the interaction between the law, new stem cell technologies and the different stakeholder groups which will be affected by these technologies.
Recent developments in stem cell science have raised the prospect of important new therapies being developed based on the commercial use of human cells. These developments call into question how the law treats the human body, its parts and cells cultured outside the body. As COO of Roslin Cells, a not-for-profit company established to produce new ethically sourced, clinical grade stem cell lines, Aidan has a privileged insight into the issues currently faced by different stakeholder groups as these new technologies develop. While at the Centre he will explore whether the law and legal analysis is keeping pace with these new technologies.
